Do they have (the right) experience?
In order to make sure the job is done correctly, you need to ensure the private investigators you work with are experienced. Take the time to ask questions about who they are, how long they have been in business, and the types of investigations they specialize in. Are they familiar with the Long Island area, New York City, Nassau County, and Suffolk County? Verify the firm is licensed, bonded, and insured.
Are they properly licensed?
The state of New York requires specific licensing in order to legally provide private investigation services. Always ensure the investigators you are working with are fully licensed and insured. This will ensure that any evidence acquired will be able to stand in the court of law. Always ask for a license number, and make sure you check the license to verify its validity.
Do they have adequate resources?
Is your investigator a lone wolf, or do they work for an investigations agency? While not everyone is looking for a giant team of investigators, it is always a good idea to ask how many investigators work for the agency along with what resources they have at their disposal to assist them with your case. Conversely, if the firm is large, are they going to be able to provide your case with the attention it deserves? Most professional agencies will assign your case its own investigator, ensuring your case receives the security and attention it deserves.

If you are looking for evidence, you want that evidence to be as clear as possible. Is the agency you are working with keeping up with the technological changes in the investigations industry? Can they prove their track record?
Make sure to ask how much experience potential investigators have with cases similar to yours. Do not be afraid to ask how well those cases worked out. A seasoned investigator will be more than happy to share their previous results – and will leave out any personal information, of course.
How is your privacy protected?
Confidentiality is a must. Don’t be afraid to ask how your investigator will handle your privacy; the last thing you want is for word of your sensitive situation to get out. A private investigator should be discreet and respectful of all the personal and private information shared between you and them.
Are they easy to reach and easy to work with?
Hiring a private investigator is stressful enough. Having to deal with a distant private investigator can make conducting your case very difficult. How much do they charge?
It’s important to get a clear idea of the costs and expenses involved in hiring a private investigator before agreeing to work with them. Make sure you set an agreement or contract before you hire them, as some investigators’ hourly rates do not include travel, mileage, video evidence, or reporting fees. If you PI is traveling from outside the Nassau County or Suffolk County area, these charges can come as an unpleasant surprise at the end. Do they use illegal or unethical means to obtain information?
Even though doing anything illegal puts a private investigator’s license at risk, some take the easy way out to solve a case. Asking this question protects you, and ensures that the information they present you will be admissible in court. Root Investigations conducts all investigations in a legal and ethical manner.
Is hiring a private investigator confidential
Yes – under New York State General Business Law Article 7, licensed investigators and their employees are legally prohibited from disclosing any case information to anyone other than the client or if the client approves, another individual or attorney. At Root Investigations, your identity, the nature of your case, and all findings are kept strictly private. We will never share your information without your consent. Your consultation is also completely confidential, which means you can speak freely. If you are working under your attorney (they would be the PI’s client), investigative materials may also be protected under attorney-client privilege or work product doctrine, which adds an extra layer of confidentiality. Please note: In the rare instance that a client is involved in criminal activity or subject to a federal investigation, law enforcement agencies such as the FBI may have the legal authority to subpoena our records. Outside of a court-ordered subpoena, your information remains fully protected.
Can I Hire a Private Investigator If I Have a Restraining Order Against Me
No – New York State law prohibits hiring a private investigator on an individual who has an active Restraining Order. Root Investigations , nor any other company in NYS, cannot conduct an investigation that involves or targets the protected individual. Doing so could be considered a violation of that order.. Using a third party, including a private investigator, to surveil, locate, or gather information on someone you are legally prohibited from contacting may result in criminal charges against you, and could expose the investigator to liability as well.
If you have a restraining order against you and believe it was issued unjustly, we recommend speaking with your attorney about the appropriate legal channels to address your situation.
Will my spouse/subject find out I hired a PI?
In most cases, no. Discretion is at the core of everything we do. Our investigators are trained to blend into any environment, conduct surveillance, and gather information without drawing attention. We never make direct contact with the subject and we never disclose who hired us. It is usually the client who ends up telling their spouse eventually that they hired a private investigator.
